Government continues with integration process of school district

The proposed amendments to the Schools Act was presented for a second reading in the House of Assembly yesterday.

If passed, the amendments will pave the way for the transition of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District into the Provincial Government.

Changes to the Act include dissolving the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, updating powers of the Minister to include regulatory making authority, and removing reference to a board and replacing with the Crown, or the department and the conseil scolaire as applicable.

The final stages of the integration process should be completed by the end of this year.

Rain returns to Western Newfoundland this afternoon, then spreads east overnight

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY OUTLOOK

The day starts quiet and sunny over much of the Island, however, clouds will spill in throughout the day from southwest from west to east. Rain will arrive on the West Coast between 4 and 6 PM and will spread east overnight. Highs climb into the upper single digits to lower teens.

The rain will end from west to east late Wednesday night and Thursday morning and will be offshore by midday Thursday. Rainfall amounts will in the 5 to 15 mm range, with up to 30 mm for parts of the West Coast.

Thursday will then see clearing conditions across the Island, with highs reaching the lower teens.

Meanwhile, in Labrador, we will see showers in the west on Wednesday, with sunny skies in the east. Highs range from 7 to 10. A cooler day is on tap for Thursday, with some flurries and/or showers in the east. Skies will be cloudy to mostly cloudy and highs will be in the 2° to 6° range.

Friday will start quietly across the Province, but rain will spread into Central, western, and southern Newfoundland during the afternoon. Highs near 10°. Labrador will see sunshine Friday, with highs near 3°.

Saturday will be another rainy day on the Island, while rain and accumulating snow will fall in Labrador. At the moment, it’s still a little too early to get into snowfall amounts, however in some areas of the North Coast it does look like it will be a healthy amount. The first decent shot of the snow this season looks to be on the way.

On the Mark: Mercer and Newhook to face off tonight in Montreal

It’s the battle of Newfoundland. Our young hockey stars square off tonight in a game that has been circled on both of their calendars, as well as fans in this province. Alex Newhook, now sporting the colours of the Montreal Canadiens, will play his former minor hockey and world junior teammate, Dawson Mercer.

Their careers have inter-twined, from their minor hockey days representing this province to playing for Canada on the international stage. But, now, it’s the latest chapter in their young NHL careers. They’ve met just a few times in the NHL, and this one is special – in hockey mecca, Montreal.

Newhook, the 22-year-old from St. John’s, has a big role in Montreal and is off to a big start with three goals in his first five games, including setting up a goal late in last night’s 3-1 win over Buffalo. Mercer, from Bay Roberts, is slow out of the gate and has been held off the scoresheet through the club’s first four games. However, the tenacious forward has been incredible since breaking into the NHL. He’s been Mr. Reliability over the past three seasons – playing in his 165th-straight game tonight – a Devils record for consecutive games played.
Game time is 8:30 NL time.
