New body safety program to be taught in K-9 schools

The province is introducing a new program to teach school children about body safety, both online and offline.

It’s called “Kids In The Know,” and will be taught in all K-to-9 schools by 2025.

One man deceased following head-on collision on TCH near Hampden Junction

A 19-year-old man is deceased after a head-on collision between two vehicles late yesterday afternoon on the Trans-Canada Highway approximately 10 kilometres west of the Hampden Junction. 

RCMP officers from Deer Lake and Corner Brook Detachments and Traffic Services West responded, along with Hampden Ambulance Service and Deer Lake Fire Rescue.  The deceased was the only occupant of the first vehicle; the driver and passenger of the second vehicle had non-life threatening injuries. Road conditions at the time of the collision were poor, with heavy rains and high winds.

A Collision Reconstructionist with RCMP Traffic Services examined the scene and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is engaged. The investigation is continuing.

Temporary closure of emergency services at Dt. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre

Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services is advising the public that emergency services at Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre on Bell Island will be temporarily closed due to human resource challenges. The closure will be:

  • Friday, October 20, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. to Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 8:00 a.m.
  • Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. to Sunday, October 22, 2023 at 8:00 a.m.

In case of emergency: Patients with a medical emergency who require an ambulance should call 911. Those who feel they have a serious or urgent medical problem should proceed to their nearest emergency department. If you are unsure if you should go to the emergency department, please call the 811 HealthLine.

Channel-Port Aux Basques RCMP investigating two recent thefts

RCMP in Port aux Basques are investigating two recently reported thefts and are seeking assistance from the public.

On October 13, 2023, police received a report of an overnight theft that occurred sometime between the evening of October 12 and the morning of October 13, 2023.  Twenty-one bundles of roofing shingles were stolen from a commercial structure on Route 408 in Cape Ray.

On October 12, 2023, police received a report of a theft of a number of items from Matador Mining located on Gold Mine Road in Isle Aux Morts.  The theft could have occurred anytime since June 2023.  The following items were stolen from the property:

  • A white Unique brand propane range/stove 
  • A white 24-inch GE brand refrigerator 
  • Sections of counter tops
  • Shelving units
  • A bathroom vanity
  • Two electric wall mounted heaters
  • Three Kool King brand 35-pint dehumidifiers
  • Various small kitchen appliances and cutlery
  • Plastic folding kitchen tables 
  • A number of folding plastic kitchen chairs

The investigations are continuing. 

Anyone having knowledge of either of these crimes, the persons responsible, or the location of stolen property is asked to contact Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP or, to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers.
