Government continues with integration process of school district

The proposed amendments to the Schools Act was presented for a second reading in the House of Assembly yesterday.

If passed, the amendments will pave the way for the transition of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District into the Provincial Government.

Changes to the Act include dissolving the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, updating powers of the Minister to include regulatory making authority, and removing reference to a board and replacing with the Crown, or the department and the conseil scolaire as applicable.

The final stages of the integration process should be completed by the end of this year.

Central Nursing Schools Open

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, two school of nursing sites will open in Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander.

The opportunity means students in Central now have a chance to get their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and become an RN, while staying closer to home. Government is hoping the schools will make a positive difference to the number of nurses available through the province and the region.

Good driving conditions across the province

Roads across the province are bare and dry for most areas with good visibility.

There are a few wet sections on the Great Northern Peninsula and southeastern Labrador.

The MV Kamutik W is in service but off schedule. Departure will be load and go. Other provincial ferries and Marine Atlantic are operating on time.

There are no delays at the St. John’s International Airport, Gander International Airport, or Deer Lake Regional Airport.

Mundy Pond Park to Temporary Close

From today until Friday, Mundy Pond Park will be closed to the public.

The closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of light poles at the ballfield.

The closure applies to the dog park, skate park, ballfield and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Playground.

Access to the walking trails in the area will be maintained.

Amendments to the Change of Name Act to Allow Denial of Name Changes for Sex Offenders

The Provincial Government is proposing changes to the legal name change process by providing the Minister of Digital Government and Service NL the authority to prohibit sex offenders from legally changing their names.

The amendments include 16 designated offences from the Criminal Code, including sexual assault, child pornography, trafficking and aggravated sexual assault.

The proposed amendments will also require criminal record checks from applicants seeking legal name changes.

Newfoundland and Labrador would become the fourth province in Canada to allow for the denial of name change applications by sex offenders.

Teen pleads guilty to aggravated assault in Prince of Wales Collegiate attack

A teenager pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for an attack on a student at Prince of Wales Collegiate last March. The teen is one of five people charged in the incident. NTV’s Rosie Mullaley reports.

The rate of homelessness in the Corner Brook area has been climbing steadily in recent months.
