Record-setting year for The Rooms

It has been a record-setting year for The Rooms.

In 2022-23, attendance and memberships were higher than they’ve ever been. Last year The Rooms welcomed more than 129,000 visitors. More than 2,000 people purchased annual memberships.

This summer the museum had more than 70,000 visitors.

For 2023-24, The Rooms is on track to have more than 130,000 people visit.

Carbonear to host “A Time for Health” event

On Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the Town of Carbonear will be holding an event focusing on health at the Civic Centre.

There will be a celebration of culture with music, food and comedy. Chef Jeremy Charles will prepare sustainable plates with locally sourced ingredients.

Music will be provided provided by The Flu Fighters.

There will also be contributions from Sean Connors, Chief of the Cardiac Care program. The event will be emceed by Pat Parfrey and Cassie Chisholm, Vice President Transformation – Health Systems.

There is no cost to attend the event, however, registration is required.

Staff at The Gathering Place Join CUPE

Employees at The Gathering Place are now members of CUPE.

Staff voted yes to become members of the union.

In total, 84 employees of the community health centre provide services, meals and an overnight shelter to people in the community who struggle with daily living.

Voting took place in June and July and was tallied this week with 89 per cent in favour of joining the union.

The new CUPE members include the Guest Support team, kitchen staff, social workers, administrative and maintenance staff, dental assistants, volunteer coordinators and boutique and guest empowerment staff. The evening staff assist with the overnight emergency shelter which is open daily from 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Icy roads reported across parts of the province

Roads are wet and on the Avalon Peninsula. In central Newfoundland, roads are mostly wet with a few icy sections from South Brook to Birchy Narrows.

On the west coast, roads are mostly dry. Roads on the northern tip of the Great Northern Peninsula have icy patches and from Flower’s Cove to the St. Anthony Airport, roads are partly covered in ice.

In Labrador, roads are dry with a few icy patches on the Southern Labrador Highway.

Marine Atlantic is on schedule. The MV Kamutik W is in service but off schedule. Other provincial ferries are on schedule.

At St. John’s International Airport, PAL Airlines flight 922 from Gander and flight 921 to Gander is delayed.

PAL Airlines flights 921 and 922 are also delayed at the Gander International Airport.

Flights are on time at the Deer Lake Regional Airport.

Mariner cruise ship to visit Corner Brook today

The Mariner cruise ship operated by Regent Seven Seas Cruises will visit Corner Brook today.

The ship will be in port from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and carries 779 passengers.

The Insignia, operated by Oceania Cruises, will visit Corner Brook on Thursday and again on November 3, rounding out the cruise ship season.

Woman arrested after assaulting homeowner

Around 9:30 p.m. Monday night, the RNC responded to a call of a disturbance at a residence in the west end of St. John’s.

A female homeowner and her adult son had just been assaulted by her tenant.

Officers arrested the 42-year-old female for assault and uttering threats.

The accused was transported to the lockup to attend court in the morning.

No injuries following collision at notorious St. John’s intersection

A two-vehicle collision at one of the most dangerous intersections in St. John’s late Monday evening caused substantial damage to both vehicles, but resulted in no reported injuries.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, at the intersection of Prince Philip Drive and Allandale Road shortly before 9:15 p.m. on Monday evening. The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles involved, with one of the cars coming to a stop a short distance away.

Paramedics with Eastern Health assessed the drivers of both vehicles, who were the only occupants, however neither required further medical attention.

Traffic was slowed in the area for close to an hour until the scene could be cleared.

AG releases report on Memorial University, finding lack of oversight and lavish spending

The province has released the long-awaited Auditor General’s report on Memorial University.

Among the findings were widespread inefficiency, lack of oversight, and lavish spending by the former president.

Municipalities NL concerned over news that many Scotiabank branches closing across the province

A number of Scotiabank branches across Newfoundland and Labrador will be shutting down in 2024.

Municipalities NL is expressing their concern today, and say seniors and low-income residents will be especially impacted.
