On the Mark: Mercer and Newhook to face off tonight in Montreal

It’s the battle of Newfoundland. Our young hockey stars square off tonight in a game that has been circled on both of their calendars, as well as fans in this province. Alex Newhook, now sporting the colours of the Montreal Canadiens, will play his former minor hockey and world junior teammate, Dawson Mercer.

Their careers have inter-twined, from their minor hockey days representing this province to playing for Canada on the international stage. But, now, it’s the latest chapter in their young NHL careers. They’ve met just a few times in the NHL, and this one is special – in hockey mecca, Montreal.

Newhook, the 22-year-old from St. John’s, has a big role in Montreal and is off to a big start with three goals in his first five games, including setting up a goal late in last night’s 3-1 win over Buffalo. Mercer, from Bay Roberts, is slow out of the gate and has been held off the scoresheet through the club’s first four games. However, the tenacious forward has been incredible since breaking into the NHL. He’s been Mr. Reliability over the past three seasons – playing in his 165th-straight game tonight – a Devils record for consecutive games played.
Game time is 8:30 NL time.
